In the entry for inherit, the word inheretance appears in the phrase: “make heir, attribute the right of inheretance to, appoint as heir.” I’ve checked several major dictionaries—Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate and Unabridged, the Oxford English Dictionary, the American Heritage Dictionary, and Webster’s 1828—and haven’t found this spelling listed in any of them.
Is this spelling indeed a typo, or is there some reason for it that I am not aware of? Perhaps a historical variant or a scanning/transcription artifact?
Thanks in advance for any insight!
