I looked for an obscure word, “Axwaddle (n. filthy or lazy person)” in this site. All I know is that it is a supposedly ancient insult, but another post states that it means “a person who likes to sit by the fire.”
It it in the interest of the online etymology dictionary to address words that have fallen not out of common use, or perhaps any use at all?
Really interesting because it’s not in Urban Dictionary which can sometimes have old words, but also not in OED that I can find .
But it’s a cool word and BEGS for etymological research.
You should ping Susie Dent who loves this sort of thing, and also there’s the “Way with Words” podcast pair, who also love this sort of thing. Please let me know if you submit it to them as I listen to their podcasts frequently.
