I find it rather suspicious that earliest forms for “autocrat” are feminine, i.e autocratress (1762). Surely these are translating Russian самодержица in reference to Catherine the Great. Since the later autocrat is in reference also to Russian Tsars, I would imagine the word is a translation of the Russian самодержец, not from Greek directly.
