A Lead on the Etymology of Lag?

Entry on lag suggests that the research falls short. I managed to find this on Wiktionary: 𒆷𒀝 - Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Perhaps also related to slug, lug, and lack.

That word that is now used in many areas has also intrigued me. In my opinion it is related to late, let, and distantly with lake, length, lapse, something to indicate non-movement.

Part of me thinks that if someone can work out why exactly lag screws / lag bolts have that name, they’ll gain a lot of insight into the origins of β€œlag”.

Then again, it could turn out to be completely irrelevant.
